- Serious Accident!
On Monday evening, shortly before6 o'clock, as Hugh Tannahill, a boy about 12 years of age, was passing along the Trongate, near the Cross, his clothes got accidentally entangled with a cart, heavily loaded with coals, when he was suddenly thrown directly in front of the wheel. The carter does not seem to have been at his post, as otherwise he must have observed the accident, from its taking place at the near wheel; and no effort being made to stop the horse, the wheel of the cart passed right over the abdomen, producing serious injuries.
Singular to relate, the little sufferer was able to rise to his knees, and to mention the address of his employer, Mr Crichton, London street, to whose shop he was immediately carried by two other boys who happened to witness the accident. On being laid down, the little fellow, although suffering severely, took a halfpenny from his pocket and gave it to one of the boys who had so assisted him. Dr Lyon was speedily in attendance, and having done all that medical skill could accomplish, the boy was conveyed to his father's house, where he at present lies.
We are happy to learn that he is now in a fair way of recovery. It is believed, however, that had it not been for the circumstance that the wheel first passed over the heel of one of his shoes, thereby raising and helping its passage over the body, he would have been killed on the spot. No policeman was near, and the carter, whose conduct must have been highly blameworthy in passing along so crowded a thoroughfare and not being in immediate attendance upon his horse, was alllowed to proceed unnoticed.
