James Fegan was moved by the plight of destitute boys in London., many of whom slept rough on the streets. He taught in 'ragged schools' and saw the need for a permanent shelter. The first home was opened in High Street, Deptford, May 1872. The need was so great that the house next door was taken on as well. The lease expired in 1882 and the work was transferred from Deptford to Southwark in July 1882 and continued until about 1914.
Each year from 1884 to 1939, with a few exceptions, parties of boys from Fegans emigrated to Canada. Generally the boys would be 14 years of age when they went, although on occasions they might be younger, particularly if accompanying an older brother. The party would travel by train from Euston station in London, to board the boat at Liverpool in the early Spring.

A 'Receiving Home', was established in 1886 at 295 George Street Toronto. This was a boarding house for Irish, English and Scottish immigrant boys under one Mr. Fegan, who helped the young lads get on their feet after their arrival in Canada. The noted William Gooderham (of Gooderham and Worts Distillery fame) left the property as well as a large sum of money to Fegan after his death. From there the boys would be found a placement on a farm. Regular visits were made to the boys up to the age of 21, to check on their wellbeing and to make sure the placement was working out appropriately.

Half-way up Toronto's infamous George street lies the decaying Tudor facade of a once beautiful mid-19th century house.

Few would associate this stretch of the neighbourhood with much more than strippers and drug dealers, yet a row of abandoned historical properties sit in its midst, slowly dying. 295 is one of three such derelict properties on the street.

Sadly, only hints of the building's former glory remain...

Recent owners have started and stopped work on the property so often that it holds little hope for revitalization...

The constant stripping and scrapping has left the stability of the structure itself fairly questionable...The remaining shambles reveal very little, giving the impression of a junk storage facility, only the exterior giving some hint of its once beautiful form.
